Reading aloud: The book and shifting forms of social engagement |
Abstract |
This paper examines the underpinning concerns motivating a program of participatory reading performances that I have been involved in over two years, across a number of art and community events. In the following pages I intend to describe the potential opportunities for specific kinds of thinking and understandings (and misunderstandings) that might be fostered through activity of reading aloud, particularly in the context of shifting relations between the reader and the text in the 'post-object' era of the book. |
